Citizenship Ceremonies

In Northern Ireland every potential new British Citizen attends a Citizenship Ceremony at Hillsborough Castle, County Down, which will be conducted by a Lord-Lieutenant.

Before receiving the Certificate of Citizenship they will be invited to swear an oath or an affirmation of allegiance to Her Majesty The Queen and then are presented with their Certificate of Citizenship.

New citizens are encouraged to bring their family or a close friend to witness the ceremony.

While the granting of citizenship is the responsibility of the Home Office, the presence of a Lord-Lieutenant or on occasion a Deputy Lieutenant as Her Majesty’s representative, demonstrates the importance of the role of the Monarchy in welcoming the new British Citizens to our community
